Genotypic variation in maize ( Zea mays ) influences rates of soil organic matter mineralization and gross nitrification

چکیده
Agricultural management practices that increase soil organic matter (SOM), such as no-tillage (NT) with crop residue retention, together varieties best able to source nutrients from SOM, may help reverse degradation and improve nutrient supply uptake by plants in low-input environments of tropical subtropical areas. Here, we screened germplasm representing genetic diversity within maize breeding programmes relation shaping SOM mineralization. Then assessed effects contrasting genotypes on nitrification rates, genotype-by-management history interactions these rates. SOM-C mineralization gross rates varied under different genotypes. Cumulative increased root diameter but decreased increasing length. Strong influences interaction were observed. Overall, higher NT retention. We propose there is potential exploit genotypic variation traits associated programmes. Root length could be used proxies for root–soil driving processes. Development enhanced ability mineralize combined retention build/replenish key sustainable production.

Nitrification rates in a headwater stream: influences of seasonal variation
Nitrification, the chemoautotrophic process by which NH4-N is converted to NO,-N, is an integral biogeochemical transformation in stream ecosystems. Previous research has shown that experimental addition of dissolved organic C inhibits rates of nitrification, and that NH4-N addition stimulates rates of nitrification. In many streams, large amounts of C and N may be present in particulate and so...
متن کاملRyegrass - derived pyrogenic organic matter changes organic carbon and nitrogen mineralization in a temperate forest soil
Pyrogenic organic matter (PyOM) is considered as a technique to improve soil fertility and store carbon (C) in soil. However, little is known regarding soil organic C and nitrogen (N) mineralization in PyOM-amended soils. To investigate the relationship between the C and N mineralization rates and the possible consequences in terms of C storage and N availability, we incubated ryegrass-derived ...
متن کاملCarbon mineralizability determines interactive effects on mineralization of pyrogenic organic matter and soil organic carbon.
Soil organic carbon (SOC) is a critical and active pool in the global C cycle, and the addition of pyrogenic organic matter (PyOM) has been shown to change SOC cycling, increasing or decreasing mineralization rates (often referred to as priming). We adjusted the amount of easily mineralizable C in the soil, through 1-day and 6-month preincubations, and in PyOM made from maple wood at 350 °C, th...
متن کاملControls on Nitrogen Cycling in Terrestrial Ecosystems: A Synthetic Analysis of Literature Data
Isotope pool dilution studies are increasingly reported in the soils and ecology literature as a means of measuring gross rates of nitrogen (N) mineralization, nitrification, and inorganic N assimilation in soils. We assembled data on soil characteristics and gross rates from 100 studies conducted in forest, shrubland, grassland, and agricultural systems to answer the following questions: What ...
